Sharing passwords in macOS Sonoma

In macOS 14 Sonoma, there is now the option to share some of your passwords that are stored in the Keychain with others. Previous operating systems could do this one at a time by sending a copy via AirDrop.

You can create a group where you store passwords you want to share with family members and friends. This group of shared passwords is synced via the iCloud Keychain and is therefore always up-to-date. They must also have a device running macOS 14 Sonoma, iOS, or iPadOS 17 or newer.  All people in the group can change the account passwords and passkeys you share. They can also share their own passwords and passkeys with the group.

By default, the group is named 'Family Passwords'

You can add people using the 'Add People' button to include more individuals. Note that you can only add people who are already in your Contacts app. If needed, you can create additional groups with additional members whom you want to share different passwords with. You can remove someone from the group using the drop-down menu next to their name. Once you've chosen a person you can choose weather they should be notified or not.

It is wise to update the passwords that were previously shared with this person or group...

To create a group to share passwords with:

As the person creating the group, only you can add and remove people from the group, rename the group, and delete the group.

  1. Choose 'Apple menu' > 'System Preferences,' then click 'Passwords' in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

  2. Click the 'Add' button at the top of the window, then choose 'New Shared Group.'

  3. Enter a name for the group.

  4. Click 'Add People.'

  5. Enter the names of people you want to share with, then click 'Add.' As you type, matching names from your contacts will appear. If a contact's name is dimmed, their device may not be using the latest software.

  6. You can also add existing groups, which appear at the bottom of the list.

  7. Click 'Create.

To share passwords with a group:

  1. Choose 'Apple menu' > 'System Preferences,' then click 'Passwords' in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

  2. Select a group. Note: An account password or passkey can only be shared with one group.

  3. Click the 'Add' button, then choose 'Move Passwords to Group.'

  4. Select the accounts with passwords or passkeys you want to share.

  5. Click 'Move.'

  6. The people in the group can now use your passwords or passkeys for the accounts you selected. The next time they open Passwords settings, they'll be prompted to accept or decline your invitation.

  7. Click 'Notify via Messages' to notify the people in the group that you've shared with them. If you don't want to notify them, click 'Not Now.'"
